Objectives
At the end of the course, participants will:

  • Understand the relationship between agriculture, economics and nutrition
  • Understand basic principles of macro-economics and micro-economics that can influence the nutritional sectors
  • Understand the relationship between economic growth and income distribution to nutritional status
  • Understand the basic principles, identify and analyze the problems of food security
  • Be able to identify and analyze food policies which affects nutrition

Topics

  • Linkages between nutrition, agriculture and economics
  • Supply, demand, price elasticity and its application
  • Food production and food distribution system
  • Consumer behavior
  • Measuring a nation's income, income distribution, and cost of living

Food security:

  1. Magnitude, dimension, and levels of food insecurity
  2. Indicators of food security

Food policy:

  1. Definition, scope and instruments
  2. Applications of food policy in different countries and lessons learned

     
Special Topic in Nutrition (STN):

  1. Health economics and health financing
  2. National planning and financing in health and nutrition sectors

Exercises/Case Studies: World Health Chart (correlating economic indicators with health indicators)
Field Work: Assessment of household food security in urban community
